Why Is My Electric Bill So High in the Summer? AC Efficiency Tips

2 min read

In Oklahoma, cooling can make up a large share of your summer electric bill. Some increase is normal when temperatures climb, but a sudden jump or a bill that keeps growing year after year can point to a system that is working harder than it should.

Signs your AC is wasting energy

  • The system runs longer than it used to

  • Some rooms are much warmer than others

  • The house feels humid or clammy

  • Your bill is higher than last year in similar weather

  • The system is more than 12 to 15 years old

Simple ways to lower cooling costs

Change your filter regularly. A clean filter keeps air moving and reduces strain on the system.

Use a smart thermostat setting. The U.S. Department of Energy suggests 78 degrees when you are home and higher when you are away. Every degree you raise the setting helps.

Use ceiling fans. Fans make a room feel cooler so you can raise the thermostat a few degrees. Turn them off when you leave the room, since they cool people, not spaces.

Block the afternoon sun. Close blinds and curtains on west and south facing windows during the hottest part of the day.

Keep the outdoor unit clear. Trim plants and keep at least two feet of space around the condenser so it can release heat.

Seal air leaks. Weatherstripping doors and caulking windows keeps cool air inside.

Avoid heat producing chores in the afternoon. Run the oven, dryer, and dishwasher in the morning or evening.

Professional maintenance makes a difference

A yearly tune up includes cleaning coils, checking refrigerant, testing electrical parts, and confirming airflow. Small problems like a weak capacitor or dirty coil can quietly add to your bill for months before anything actually breaks.

Is it time for a more efficient system?

Newer systems use far less energy than units from 15 or 20 years ago. If your system is aging and your bills keep climbing, we can give you an honest comparison of repair versus replacement.
