Is It an HVAC Emergency? When to Call Right Away and When It Can Wait

2 min read

When your heating or cooling stops working, it can be hard to know whether you need someone tonight or whether it can wait until morning. Here is a simple guide.

Call right away if

  • You smell gas. Leave the home immediately and call your gas company or 911 from outside.

  • You smell burning or see smoke from your unit or vents. Turn the system off at the breaker.

  • Your carbon monoxide detector is going off. Get everyone outside and call 911.

  • Water is leaking through a ceiling from an attic unit.

  • You have no cooling during extreme heat and there are infants, elderly family members, or anyone with health conditions in the home.

  • You have no heat during freezing temperatures, which can put people and pipes at risk.

  • A breaker keeps tripping for your HVAC system.

Usually safe to schedule a regular visit

  • The system works but is not keeping up as well as it used to

  • A new noise that is not grinding or banging

  • A musty smell

  • Higher than normal electric bills

  • One room is warmer or cooler than the rest

Staying safe in extreme heat while you wait

  • Close blinds and curtains

  • Use fans and stay on the lowest level of the home

  • Drink plenty of water

  • Check on elderly neighbors and family

  • If the inside temperature gets dangerous, go somewhere cool like a family member's home, a library, or a cooling center

Staying safe in the cold while you wait

  • Close doors to unused rooms

  • Never use a gas oven or stove to heat your home

  • Use space heaters carefully, keep them away from anything that can burn, and never leave them running unattended

  • Open cabinet doors under sinks on exterior walls and let faucets drip to protect pipes
