How Long Does an AC Unit Last? When to Repair and When to Replace

2 min read

Every air conditioner reaches a point where repairs stop making sense. Knowing where your system is in its life helps you make a smart decision instead of a rushed one in the middle of July.

How long do AC systems last?

With regular maintenance, most central air conditioners and heat pumps last around 12 to 15 years. In Oklahoma, long cooling seasons, heat, storms, and dust can be hard on equipment. Systems that were never maintained often wear out sooner.

Signs it may be time to replace

  • Your system is 12 to 15 years old or older

  • Repairs are becoming frequent

  • Your electric bills keep rising

  • The house never feels comfortable or humidity is high

  • The compressor has failed on an older system

  • Your system uses R-22 refrigerant

What about R-22?

If your system was installed before about 2010, it may use R-22 refrigerant. R-22 is no longer produced in the United States, so the remaining supply is limited and expensive. A major refrigerant leak on an R-22 system is often a strong reason to consider replacement.

Refrigerant rules are still changing. New systems now use newer refrigerants designed to be better for the environment. We are happy to explain what that means for your home.

A simple rule of thumb

One common guideline is to multiply the age of the system by the repair cost. If the result is more than the cost of a new system, replacement is usually the better investment. It is not a perfect rule, but it is a helpful starting point.

When repair makes sense

  • The system is less than 10 years old

  • The repair is minor, such as a capacitor, contactor, or drain issue

  • The system has been well maintained and still keeps you comfortable

Our promise

We will always give you honest options. We will not push a replacement when a repair will do the job. When replacement makes sense, we will help you choose a system sized correctly for your home.
