Why Does My AC Smell? What Common HVAC Odors Mean

2 min read

Your nose is one of the best diagnostic tools you have. Different smells coming from your vents point to different problems, and some need attention right away.

Musty or moldy smell

This is the most common odor we hear about. It usually comes from moisture buildup on the indoor coil, a dirty drain pan, a clogged condensate line, or mold growing in the ductwork. Changing the filter and keeping the condensate line clear helps. If the smell continues, a coil cleaning or duct inspection may be needed.

Burning or electrical smell

A burning smell that lingers can mean an overheating motor, a failing electrical component, or burnt wiring. Turn the system off at the thermostat and the breaker and call a technician. Note that a dusty burning smell the first time you turn on the heat in the fall is normal and should go away within an hour.

Rotten egg smell

Natural gas has a rotten egg odor added so leaks can be detected. If you smell this near a gas furnace or anywhere in your home, leave the house right away and call your gas company or 911 from outside. Do not flip switches or use anything that could cause a spark.

Dirty sock smell

This is often caused by bacteria growing on the indoor coil, especially in heat pump systems when they switch between modes. A professional coil cleaning usually solves it.

Vinegar or sour smell

A sour smell can come from mold, a clogged drain, or, in some cases, an electrical component that is overheating.

Exhaust or chemical smell

Exhaust fumes can mean a problem with your furnace venting, which can be dangerous because of carbon monoxide. Make sure you have working carbon monoxide detectors on every level of your home.

Dead animal smell

Unfortunately, small animals sometimes get into ductwork or the attic and die there. The smell gets pulled through the system. This requires locating and removing the source.
