AC Keeps Turning On and Off, or Never Shuts Off? Here Is What It Means
A healthy air conditioner runs in steady cycles, usually somewhere around 10 to 20 minutes at a time depending on the weather. If your system keeps turning on and off every few minutes, or seems to run all day without ever shutting off, something needs attention.
When your AC keeps turning on and off (short cycling)
Dirty filter or restricted airflow. Poor airflow can cause the system to overheat or freeze and trip safety controls.
Thermostat location. A thermostat near a supply vent, a sunny window, or a heat source like a lamp or TV can get false readings and shut the system off too early.
Oversized system. A system that is too big for your home cools the air quickly and shuts off before it has a chance to remove humidity. This often leaves the house feeling cool but clammy.
Low refrigerant. A leak can cause pressure safeties to trip and the system to shut off repeatedly.
Electrical issues. A failing capacitor, contactor, or control board can cause the system to start and stop erratically.
When your AC never shuts off
Extreme heat. On a 100 degree plus Oklahoma afternoon, it is normal for a properly sized system to run almost constantly. Most systems are designed to keep the inside about 20 degrees cooler than the outside.
Dirty filter or coils. Dirty coils on either the indoor or outdoor unit reduce how much heat the system can move.
Low refrigerant. The system runs and runs but never quite catches up.
Leaky ductwork. If your ducts run through a hot attic and have leaks, cooled air escapes before it reaches your rooms.
Undersized or aging system. As systems age, they lose efficiency. A system that is too small for the home will struggle every summer.
Why it matters
Short cycling and constant running both wear out parts faster and drive up your electric bill. The compressor takes the most stress during startup, so a short cycling system is shortening its own life.
